morning piece mourning peace
While the seeds of disharmony continue to be sewn
With justice in question and truth to be known
A piano out of tune never meant to be
Played backwards without hands on black and white key
And an unexpected chord was struck with a knee
Sleights of hands not the grace of dexterous fingers
Leaves a picture that remains and haunts as it lingers
Not the kind of memory of an old photograph
Once meant to capture joy in smiles or a laugh
The view of a dark shadow, not a gentle silhouette
On things that were done without remorse or regret
Lines crossed without question
Lines were not blurred
Pitting powers of silence
Against powers of word
Echoing in streets for the pain to be heard
Slow minutes without breath
Fast turns into death
Blue and white collars
Losing sense for a few dollars
The cost and expense
Of the behavior and intents
Of acts not humane
Profound and profane
The blood in the street from a push or a shove
Hearts broken by the country of freedom we love
But with darkness, there is light
And beauty in black and white
Let our true colors shine not to divide
For our state to unite, restore honor and pride
Let launching of rockets into space and the stars
Remind us of who we want to be
Remind us of who we are
Our time on earth
For what it’s worth
If we’re driven or divided by fear or by pain
We have so much to lose when there is so much to gain
Imagine life without harmony, color and affection
We still have a choice to change the direction
Don’t leave it to chance or a roll of the dice
